Paulo Freire, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, was a Brazilian educator who spent much of his young adulthood leading adult literacy campaigns. Freire asserted that most schools promoted the values of the dominant class, creating a “culture of silence” where underserved individuals were deprived of the means to think critically about their role in society.  In this 2-part book group, we’ll explore how Paulo Freire’s theories about education for liberating an oppressed citizenry apply to teaching today.
