Online Teaching Institute

The Online Teaching Institute (OTI) is one of the signature programs at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Open to all faculty members and teaching assistants at Temple, the OTI is designed for both new and experienced online instructors who are interested in designing and teaching an effective online course that helps students succeed. The institute is a 4-week cohort based course led by CAT instructors and is delivered in the Fall or Spring semesters. The course is offered in two formats: a hybrid model, and an asynchronous model. Participants can choose which format they prefer to take. There are no in-person meetings in either version.

It is recommended that you know how to use the basic functions of Canvas (Temple’s learning management system) and Zoom (Temple’s web conferencing system) prior to participating in the OTI. If you are new to either of these technology tools, you may want to familiarize yourself with our Canvas and/or Zoom resource pages beforehand.

Hybrid OTI

The OTI is a mix of asynchronous (via Canvas) and synchronous (via Zoom). Over four weeks you will participate in three live Zoom sessions as well as participate in some activities on Canvas with other faculty fellows.

Upon successful completion of the OTI, you will be able to:

  • Explore key elements of online course design.
  • Recognize the role of the instructor in establishing a community of inquiry and presence online.
  • Identify methods of delivering video lectures and create effective collaborative learning.
  • Apply evidence-based practices for managing online courses.

Asynchronous OTI

The AOTI is completely asynchronous and does not include live meetings so that you can complete the activities at your own pace. Since the AOTI is cohort-based, you will have the opportunity to discuss and learn from other faculty members in this cohort as well.

  • Identify methods of engaging and motivating learners in an online course.
  • Explore key elements of online course design.
  • Align goals with assessments and learning activities.
  • Apply evidence-based practices for effective teaching and learning in an online learning environment.
