In this session of the Can We Really Talk Series, we will discuss selections from our AFC keynote speaker, Stephen Brookfield’s edited volume “Teaching Race: How to Help Students Unmask and Challenge Racism" (2019). If you have concerns about engaging in these types of discussions with your students, we will share and practice some effective methods for facilitating discussions so that they are respectful and productive learning experiences. We will also learn about how to prepare for these conversations by creating a brave space and a plan for managing hot moments and unexpected missteps that may arise while doing this important work.
Recommended readings: Chapters 6, 7, and 10 of the edited volume. We will use strategies from each chapter. The readings are available in an ebook online through Temple Libraries at https://onlinelibrary-wiley-com.libproxy.temple.edu/doi/book/10.1002/9781119548492
The Can We Really Talk? Series is co-sponsored with the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL).
